Listen to Messages From Your Body

Many of us are disconnected from our bodies.

We spend all of our time in them, but little of that time is spent tuning in to the messages our bodies are constantly sending us. In fact, most of us–if we’re honest–spend more time ignoring messages from our bodies than tuning in to them.

Why do we do this? There are many reasons.

Culturally, we are a thinking society. Our work lives, especially, are typically geared toward thinking activities. And much of that intellectual work requires long hours of sitting and basically ignoring our bodies.

Taking care of–and even paying attention to–our bodies has become something we have to schedule into our calendars. But those are already crammed. The list of people whose needs that take priority over our own is long, and time is in short supply.

And finally, our way of dealing with physical symptoms is usually focused on covering them up rather than on ferreting out the root cause.

All of this has contributed to us being a group of people who need to be reminded to check in with our bodies and listen to what they have to tell us–about what we are struggling with, what we need, and how we can take care of ourselves.

So, if you’re curious about what your own body has to tell you:

  • Close your eyes.

  • Take a breath.

  • Turn your attention inward.

  • And ask yourself this question:

What does my body have to tell me right now?
